Salem Golden Egg Hunt 2009

Come downtown April 11, 2009 for the Salem Golden Egg Hunt and Open House. Pick up your Golden Ticket at The Trolley Depot, visit at least 8 of the businesses listed on the back and be entered for a chance to win a Golden Egg Gift Basket filled with goodies from downtown Salem merchants and a $100 bill!

Get your picture taken with the Easter Bunny at the Museum Place Mall from 12 noon-2 pm. From 2-3 pm the Easter Bunny will be hopping throughout Downtown Salem handing out eggs filled with special offers from Salem merchants (such as The Trolley Depot). Each participating merchant will be offering refreshments.

Not quite gone

It's a very sad thing. We had to close our store in downtown Salem. As much fun as we were having, and as many people who kept telling us how much they loved the store, it just wasn't feasible to remain open.

But do not despair! We have integrated the stock from Wicked Goodz into our flagship store, The Trolley Depot. And we are keeping our web store, www.wickedgoodz.com open for business.
Which means you'll still be able to buy your sushi bandages, Avenging Unicorn playset, Zombie Brain gelatin mold, Mario Bros energy drinks, and all that other weird stuff we were known for.

So, shop online or, if you're in downtown Salem, come by The Trolley Depot and visit us.

It's Spring!

I realize that the first day of Spring is March 21st (the Spring Equinox), but around here, it doesn't usually feel springlike until the middle of April, when the threat of frost is finally over.
This winter seemed exceptionally long due to several nasty strains of flu that took Massachusetts by storm. Every employee we have got hit with at least one strain, thankfully not all at once.

But now the sun is shining, the birds are singing, and we've all stopped puking. In between the chills and coughs and NyQuil induced delirium we worked on our new website. And I'm happy to announce it's up and running. We have all kinds of nifty stuff for your buying pleasure. Please hop on over and check it out!

Sweet Salem

Wow! can you believe February is here already? Next week is the 6th annual "Salem's So Sweet"chocolate and ice sculpture festival. The sculptures last year were just stunning, I can't wait to see what they do this year.

Besides the ice sculptures, there's also chocolate & wine tastings, a blood drive, a raffle and many of the stores are giving away yummies and special discounts.

Wicked Goodz will have free candy plus a special gift with purchase of $20 or more. And of course, we have the most interesting gifts for your sweetie.

Where else can you get an "I love You" toast stamp,

"Love Toss" flinging cupid game,

"Scorned Woman" fudge (chocolate with a hint of jalepeno),

We've been working hard on our new website. We're hoping to have it up and running by the end of the month for your shopping pleasure. There's so many things to add to it, I'm not quite sure where to begin. Pictures to take, descriptions to write, lots to do!

It's that time of year again, when Pirates descend upon our fair city. The ever-popular annual Salem Pirate Faire is back at Winter Island, September 15 & 16. It's a weekend long treasure chest of piratey goodness (or should that be badness)? It's sure to please the whole family, from the Captain right down to your littlest buccaneer. There's music, food, games, merchandise, and of course, Pirates.

Bone up on your pirate-speak for International Talk like a Pirate Day, September 19th. How awesome would it be if you could get the whole office doing it? "Arrrr, where's the quarterly reports?", "Avast! The copier be out of ink again!", "Smith! Bring me my coffee before I keelhaul you, you bilge rat." It'd be grand.

As always we have a treasure trove of booty to please even the scurveyest of dogs. Here's a few of our most recent aquisitions.

Pirate or Ninja?

It is the question of the ages, who is cooler, Pirates or Ninjas?

Really it's a hard call. They both have their good points and drawbacks.

They both have interesting uniforms. Ninjas often wear similar uniforms of black, masks, and toe-socks!
Of course, Pirates get the bling; with multiple earrings and gaudy necklaces, not to mention ruffly shirts, leather boots, hats, and lots of scarves. No two Pirates seem to look alike, it's an "anything goes" attitude with their wardrobe.

They both get to carry weapons. Although both use knives and swords, Ninjas get specialized items like shuriken and nunchucks! Not to mention kick*ss martial arts skills.
Much cooler than a rusty cutlass and a pistol.

Ninjas drink sake and eat tasty foods like sushi, rice, and ramen (some ninjas eat lots of ramen!). Pirates drink rum (lots of rum) and eat hardtack and dried beef. They also have to worry about scurvy.
I'm thinking the ninjas win that round.

Of course, both lifestyles are fraught with danger. You don't see too many old Pirates or Ninjas. And if you lose an arm or leg your Ninja career is pretty much over, although it doesn't seem to stop a Pirate. Score one for the seadogs!

The best part about Pirates is their symbol; the skull and crossbones. Awesome. It looks good on anything (shirts, flags, shower curtains, aprons...)

No matter your preference, I think we can all agree that both Ninjas and Pirates are pretty freakin cool and we've got the merchandise to prove it!

stick that in your basket

Oh my, it has been awhile since I last posted. Seems I completely skipped March. Ah well.

This month we have Spring to look forward to. I know the official first day of spring was last month but since we still have snow and frigid temps here I'll hold off on working in the garden until I'm sure we're defrosted. Sometime in May, I expect.

We're trying to get into the spring feel here with some fun items for a certain bunny to include in your basket. What says "Spring" more than a colorful basket filled with random candy and stuff!
We love random stuff!

Some of my favorites are this collection of mini toys (paints, modeling clay, markers and crayon).

Who could resist cute little duck-keys? A set of four rubber covers for your keys, so you can tell them apart. I'm going to put some on the hubby's work keys and see how long it takes him to notice (hee hee).

Is this the cutest thing ever?! Look at his happy little face! I love this plastic bank, it's just soooo cute! (squeals)

Yes, bunnies and chicks are very nice. But why have a boring ol' spring plushie when you could have a plush jackalope instead?!

Chocolate eggs and marshmallow peeps are nice, but this stuff won't rot your teeth. Happy Spring!

Love is in the air...

Hello my lovelies! I hope you all have a lovely Valentine's Day. We're waiting with bated breath to see if the first Nor'easter of the season hits us tomorrow. It's been very cold and windy here but we've only had 1.8 inches of snow so far. Usually by this time we average around 16 inches of snow . I'm not sure whether to be thankful or not.

At any rate, my dog and I braved the weather to take pictures of the ice sculptures that have popped up around town thanks to the Salem's So Sweet event. We helped fund the mermaid (my personal favorite).

Some of the other sculputres included a teapot, witch on a broom (gives whole new meaning to the expression "cold as a witch's teat" doesn't it?), a pair of seals, and Harry Potter (did you know Salem is the only North American city mentioned in the series?)!

This is the 5th year Salem has done this festival. I love seeing the ice sculptures, and sampling all the chocolate yummies offered by many of our fine retailers and resturants. Can't wait to see what they do next year!

A new year

Here we are, first post of the new year. We've recovered from the holiday shopping madness, the parties, and the sudden drop in temperature (last week it was 60 and yesterday was a chilly 24!).

Salem pretty much shuts down for the winter. Most of the attractions are closed, and many of the stores downtown will open weekends only. Makes it easy to find a parking spot, but a bit lonely.

This is the time of year we scour catalogs and websites, looking for new and exciting merchandise for our store. We've already spotted a couple of promising items.

Ahhh, coffee... I can't get through the day without a good cuppa joe. And I'm betting you're going to buy at least one mug for somebody on your list. It's a great gift for anyone, I mean, everybody drinks! Here's a selection of coffee (or tea) mugs for your shopping pleasure.

Shakespearean Mugs of Love & Lust.

Well here we are; November.

Through the judicial use of caffeine and chocolate (and the most awesomest caramel apples ever!) we've made it through another grueling October in Salem.

Salem sees an average of 173,000 visitors each October. That's something like a third or fourth of our annual visitors!

It's a crazy month and we look at it with a mix of anticipation and dread. The energy is really electric and we get to meet lots of interesting visitors. But it's also exhausting, with very long, busy days. By the end of the month, most of us are barely functional.

But, we've now had a chance to catch up on sleep and we're ready to get blogging again. Stay tuned for cool stuff.

Notes from a Blue State*

We buy from lots of different vendors in order to have a diverse inventory for your shopping pleasure. One of our favorite vendors is the Unemployed Philosophers Guild. Besides having a pithy name, they have great intellectually quirky stuff. And we carry a lot of it.

Some extremely popular items seem to all be Dubbya related. In fact, it seems as though every time he opens his mouth, we get a flurry of website orders for items such as;

The Disappearing Civil Liberties mug. Pour in a hot beverage and watch your rights fade away. It’s a great gift for everyone! Your blue state friend will appreciate your ironic humor while sipping her organic free-trade green tea/mango infusion and listening to NPR. Your red state relative can quaff his overpriced coffee over his stock quotes and veal piccatta while planning his retaliatory gift (possibly a membership to the NRA?). You know, every time there’s a press conference from the Capitol, we get orders for this mug. Maybe we should send the White House a “thank you” note?

Need to get that nasty taste out of you mouth after watching the news? Try the peppermint flavored “National Embarrassmints”, or the peach flavored “Impeachmints”. Each flavor comes in a travel size tin square. (Mints contain both natural and artificial sweeteners.) I’m amused at how many Red State visitors buy these, usually with some kind of apology, “I didn’t vote for him!”

Are you a bit tense after reading the national news? Try our handy little stress reliever; “Smush Bush”. Made of squeezable foam, he’s the perfect size to fit in the palm of your hand and squish (repeat as necessary). It also makes a nice safe projectile to throw at the T.V. (it is not safe as a pet toy).

The header tag has some of his more memorable quotes on the back, including my personal favorite, “It’s clearly a budget. It has a lot of numbers in it.” We’ve sold a lot of these, although for some reason we keep finding ones with the head ripped off. Hmmm, I wonder why?

Heritage Days

This week we celebrate "Heritage Days" here in Salem. It's a week where locals especially are encouraged to explore Salem and all it has to offer. Take a trolley tour, visit the museums (you know, the ones you haven't been to since school), do some shopping at the Essex Street Fair, hit the ice cream scooper bowl at the Commons... have some fun! For our first post I've decided to showcase a few items from the store that I love.

First up are two projects I completed from the awesome DIY book, "Generation T, 108 ways to transform a T-shirt" by Megan Nicolay. I made a poncho and turned a too-big men's tee into my new favorite fitted tee.

Both projects were pretty simple, and the tee was completely no-sew! Projects also include skirts, bags, even a wedding dress all made from T-shirts! I love this book!

Next up is a handy little item. The Hula girl duster is perfect for keeping your computer, stereo, and workspace dust free. She's just a tiny little piece of paradise in your otherwise dreary cubicle. What's that she's saying?; "Let my hips dance the song of cleanliness."
